Australia's firefighters are now 'better equipped than ever' to fight bushfire threats

It may be Autumn across Australia - but you only have to cast your mind back a couple of months to know the threat of bushfires isn't over.

The fires across New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia destroyed property and threatened lives

At least 70 properties were destroyed in March, in Tathra on the NSW South Coast.

Firefighters say the seasons are getting longer, but those that battle the blaze are now better equipped and better trained than ever before.

"We need those different helicopters and different planes," Victorian Simon White told 9NEWS.

"Variety of aircraft is critical. All the different aircraft have their own strength and weaknesses."

Mr White is one of Australia's representatives at a global conference of aerial firefighters being held in Sacramento, California.

"A conference like this is the opportunity to share learnings and look just over the horizons at what's coming," he said.

The conference is a practical example of the formal alliance between Australia, the United States and Canada, that sees equipment, knowledge and resources criss-crossing the Pacific.

"We've built a long lasting relationship that's only going to grow," CAL Fire Chief Ken Pimlott said.

Chief Pimlott is at the helm of one of the largest domestic fire services in the world, but when wildfires tore through hundreds of homes late last year, he turned to Australia to boost his stocks.

"It was simply amazing," he said.

"And to put them out on the fire line, it was so well received - we're still seeing videos."

The chief welcomed aircraft and fire fighters home for the season ahead and said he'll be studying Australia's fires to improve their response.

"The challenge we're all facing is maintaining this battle rhythm all year round," he said.

The Aussies at the conference agree.

"We're always planning for the season and the season ahead," Mr White said.
