Young Australian Army recruit dies following Good Friday incident

A young Australian Army recruit has died in a Sydney hospital following an incident over the Easter weekend.

Liam Wolf was completing basic training at the Army Recruit Training Centre in Kapooka in New South Wales when he was involved in an incident, the Department of Defence said in a statement.

The department did not reveal any details about the incident which happened on Good Friday.

Wolf, from Queensland, was taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital before he was airlifted to Sydney for specialist treatment. He died of his injuries.

“Defence offers its deepest condolences to Liam’s family and friends and ongoing welfare support is being provided to them,” the Department of Defence said.

“Defence notes the commendable actions of those Army members and health staff involved in providing immediate first aid.”

Due to privacy requirements, the government department will not be releasing further information regarding the recruit’s personal or service details.

The Australian Defence Force is working with the New South Wales Police and ComCare to investigate the incident.
