Dangerous surf warning for NSW, storms for Queensland and Northern Territory

Residents along the NSW coast have been warned of dangerous surf conditions and strong winds expected to lash the northern parts of the state today.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a hazardous surf warning for the Byron Coast, Coffs Coast, Macquarie Coast and Hunter Coast with people told to avoid rock fishing and other potentially dangerous activities.

Onshore winds combined with a trough are driving coastal showers and a few storms along the NSW coast today and with the wet weather expected to extend into Queensland as well.

Further north, a trough in the tropics is generating rain and storms.

Another trough with a front is causing a few showers in western Victoria and Tasmania.

Conditions in South Australia will be cool-to-mild in the southeast and central with showers clearing throughout the day. Mostly sunny, cool-to-mild in the west and isolated showers with very warm-to-hot temperatures in north.

It comes of the back of a hot week for the state that saw Adelaide's hottest spell in three years and Mount Gambeir's hottest run in 12 years.
