Australia set to be drenched by storms stretching across the country’s south

Huge parts of southern Australia are set to be drenched this week, including already sodden areas that are at risk of flooding.

Weatherzone warned on Sunday “there’s a storm coming ... and we all best be ready when she does”, saying the week of wet was a timely reminder of the storm season “right around the corner”.

“On Monday the low really kicks off with rain and storms across much of South Australia, parts of the Eyre and Yorke peninsulas and the Adelaide Hills could see locally heavy rain of 30 to 50 millimetres,” Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist David Crock said.

“Many grain growers in those areas have had an excellent winter and are actually ready for a break from the rain.”

A day later is when flooding is more likely.

On Tuesday, the focus shifts to north-east Victoria and southern NSW, where 40 to 60 millimetres or more falling on those wet catchments will likely see another round of flooding,” Crock said.

“Two-day totals of 10 to 30 millimetres are likely across the rest of the Murray Darling and southern South Australia.”

There will be a frost risk in southern parts of Western Australia before showers up the coast, Crock said.

“On the east coast the focus shifts to eastern NSW and southern Queensland, with showers and storms continuing there as the low moves offshore.

“By Thursday, this high dominates the east, but with no cold outbreak, frost risk is limited.

“Another low in the west could bring useful rain to the south coast, and the high blocks that system from moving too far east during Friday, when we may see a weak cold front clip Tasmania and southern Victoria.”
