AUSTRALIA HAS RECORDED ITS HOTTEST JULY SINCE RECORDS BEGAN IN 1908

The mean maximum temperature was 2.62C above the average maximum temperature and 0.66C above the previous record set in 1975.

The north of Australia has felt most of heat, with the average maximum temperatures the highest on record.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA:

* 36.3C at Bidyadanga on July 27.

NORTHERN TERRITORY:

* 35.8C at Bradshaw on July 6.

* 25.7C (warmest night in Australia) recorded at McCluer Island on July 5.

QUEENSLAND:

* 35C at Kowanyama Airport on July 19.

NEW SOUTH WALES:

* 30.2C at Brewarrina on July 30.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA:

* 31.2 C at Nullarbor on July 28 and at Oodnadatta on July 29.
