Australia's emissions rise by 2.2 per cent

Australia's direct carbon pollution emissions increased by 2.2 per cent in the 2015/16 financial year.

The Clean Energy Regulator released its 2015/16 national greenhouse and energy reporting data on Tuesday.

Regulator chairwoman Chloe Munro said the rise was a direct result of increased electricity generation and higher levels of Liquefied Natural Gas production.

Corporations reported a total of 334 million tonnes of direct emissions in 2015/16.

These emissions include coal burning for electricity production, methane emissions from coal mines and emissions produced from manufacturing processes

There was also 90 million tonnes of indirect emissions.

Greens MP Adam Bandt said Australia was getting dirtier under "King of Pollution Turnbull".

""Malcolm Turnbull has signed Australia up to more heatwaves, worse bushfires and rising sea levels," he said in a statement.

The Australian Conservation Foundation was equally unimpressed.

"Turnbull government policies that are supposedly designed to cut Australia's climate pollution are simply not doing the job," chief executive Kelly O'Shanassy said in a statement.
