Mail truck bursts into flames destroying parcels and letters

A truck transporting mail and parcels for Australia Post has burst into flames on the Capricorn Highway, west of Rockhampton.

Mail - including letters and parcels, new phones and clothes - bound for towns in the Central Highlands has been destroyed.

The driver managed to unhook the trailers from the prime mover around 11pm Tuesday and escaped uninjured.

Australia Post said it knows the situation is "frustrating for our customers" and is working with businesses to contact anyone who may have lost items.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
