Australia pledges millions to Ebola fight as Obama fears deadly outbreak is threat to global security

Australia has pledged $7 million to the international fight against Ebola, the deadly disease killing thousands in west Africa.

American president Barack Obama has committed to sending 3000 troops to the region, calling the outbreak a threat to global security.

It's another war for Mr Obama to fight, though this time he's going into battle willingly.

US military personnel will train hundreds of health care workers and build 17 health care centres in Liberia.

“This is an epidemic that is not just a threat to regional security, it’s a potential threat to global security if these countries break down,” Mr Obama said.

The troops will be faced with doctors and nurses working in archaic conditions.

Recovered Ebola patient Dr Kent Brantley has compared the epidemic to an out of control bushfire.

The Ebola death toll is now estimated at 2500, but with 5,000 others infected that number is growing by the day.
