Fire warnings issued as Australia braces for sweltering summer, according to BOM long-range forecast

Most of Australia is set for a sweltering summer and sweaty nights, according to the Bureau of Meteorology's long-range forecast.

Released today, it revealed that temperatures across most of the country will be warmer than average.

Parts of Queensland, the south-east, and even Tasmania are facing an increased chance of unusually warm daytime temperatures.

Overnight temperatures are also expected to be above average in most parts of the country, especially in the north.

Meanwhile, summer rainfall in the west and inland east will be below average.

Severe thunderstorms may occur across the country well into December and the wet season in Northern Australia, which is already underway, may cause floods.

Australia's fire agencies have put parts of Victoria, western and southern Western Australia, and parts of central northern NSW on alert for an increased risk of fires.

Summer long-range forecast by state and territory

NSW

Summer is going to be hot in NSW, both during the day and overnight.

Above-average temperatures are predicted with an increased chance of unusually high overnight temperatures across some central and eastern parts of the state.

Expect below-average rainfall, especially in large parts of inland NSW.

ACT

Like NSW, the ACT can expect below-average rainfall and above-average temperatures.

The ACT has also been warned to prepare for unusually high overnight temperatures, making for sweaty summer nights.

Queensland

It's going to be scorching in the Sunshine State, with above-average temperatures during the day and an increased chance of unusually warm nights across most of the state.

Rainfall will be a mixed bag.

Parts of far north Queensland can expect a drenching with above-average rainfall likely.

But the western parts of the state are slated for below-average rainfall, and the east has roughly equal chances of high or low rainfall.

Victoria

Like most of the eastern states, much of Victoria will be sweating through unusually high daytime temperatures.

Warmer than usual nights are also on the forecast, along with below-average summer rainfall.

Western Australia

Over in WA, the locals are being told to expect warmer-than-average days and nights throughout summer.

The northern half of the state will face an increased chance of unusually high daytime temperatures.

It may also cop unusually high overnight temperatures, as will the south-west.

Rainfall will probably be below average for large parts of the state.

South Australia

The days and nights will be warmer than average in SA.

Below-average rainfall is also predicted for much of the state, though that may change in January and February.

Tasmania

Tasmania's summers are usually temperate, but the state is set for warmer-than-usual summer days and nights this season.

There's an increased chance of unusually high temperatures across much of the state, and near-equal chances of above or below average rainfall.

Northern Territory

The wet season has already started up north, but the NT is actually likely to experience below-average rainfall for some parts of the west and north this summer.

Temperatures are very likely to be warmer than usual during the day, as well as at night.
