Aust cancels 490 foreigners' visas

The number of foreigners being kicked out of Australia is expected to increase, the immigration minister says.

The visas of 490 foreigners have been cancelled by the Australian government in the financial year up till the end of May.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton says there has been a dramatic increase in the number of cancellations over the past few months, with 24 rapists, 28 pedophiles and 12 murderers kicked out of Australia.

"They're significant numbers and the numbers will continue to build as we work through those people who are in our country on visas who have committed criminal offences - they won't be staying in Australia," he told reporters in Melbourne on Saturday.

He said there was a particular focus on outlaw motorcycle gang members and people who committed serious crimes.

Mr Dutton said the people who had their visas cancelled came from across the world, including the Pacific region, the Middle East and Europe.

Mr Dutton said 99 per cent of them came to Australia on a visa.

"But for the one per cent, they will have a very quick exit out of our country where legally we can send them packing."
