Islamic State East Asia, which is threatening peace and stability in the southern Philippines, has been listed as a terrorist organisation under Australia's criminal code.

Attorney-General George Brandis says the listing follows careful consideration and advice from Australia's security agencies.

Under the criminal code, it is an offence to be a member of, participate in, train with or provide support to a terrorist organisation with penalties of up to 25 years in jail.
