Australia backs prosecuting IS at ICC
Australia is interested in exploring with other countries ways to prosecute individual Islamic State terrorists, possibly over crimes against humanity.
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, in New York for the United Nations general assembly, this week attended an initiative of Belgium, Iraq and the United Kingdom about holding individual terrorists to account for atrocities they've committed.
It would be explored through an international investigation under the auspices of the International Criminal Court in the Hague.
"Australia certainly supports that," Ms Bishop told Sky News on Wednesday (AEST).
"We are exploring ways to prosecute the individual terrorists, not just defeat Daesh the terrorist organisation militarily."
