Australia is tightening laws it hopes will help better protect waters around the north and south poles.

A bill introduced to parliament on Thursday places further restrictions on oil, noxious liquid substances, sewage and garbage from certain ships - specifically in the Antarctic and Arctic regions.

"The amendments I have introduced will go a long way towards improving shipping practices, reducing marine pollution, and ensuring we meet our international obligations," Transport Minister Darren Chester told MPs.
