Aust needs to 'muscle up' US travel advice

Former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer says the federal government needs to beef up its travel advice for the US to include warnings about guns.

Mr Fischer said America had upgraded its advice for Australia in the wake of the Paris terror attacks, and suggested Australia do the same following the deadly California shootings.

Up to 14 people may have been killed and another 14 wounded in an attack in San Bernardino.

"Have we not reached a stage where the smart traveller advice of DFAT now needs to be muscled up?" Mr Fischer told ABC TV on Thursday.
