An Australian aerial fire-fighting crew has arrived in Indonesia to help water bomb raging forest fires.

A water tank aircraft and turbo commander plane have touched down in Sumatra and will start operations on Wednesday, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says.

She has expressed gratitude to the NSW Rural Fire Service for rapidly responding to Indonesia's request for assistance and also praised the Victorian government for providing personnel.
