Thousands of Australian teenagers will be taught skills aimed at preventing mental health issues, including being kind to themselves.

The Healthy Minds program will be run in 10 high schools across the country, with the Commonwealth contributing $210,000 to the trial.

Year 8 students will take part in weekly sessions led by a psychologist for two months, learning skills for managing their mental health, including self-compassion and understanding emotions.
