Police have appealed for the return of Sean Wroe's Commonwealth Games medals. (Vic police)

A Commonwealth Games gold medal won at the MCG is among the treasured mementos stolen from the Melbourne home of a former Australian sprinter.

Sean Wroe's South Yarra apartment was burgled a month ago with passports, jewellery and other possessions taken along with the runner's Commonwealth Games, world championship and Universiade Games medals.

A 25-year-old man has been charged over the robbery but police haven't recovered Wroe's 400m medals including one awarded after Australia triumphed in the relay at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

A Victoria police spokesman today said the medals "are of great sentimental value".
