Convicted Australian sex offenders made 900 attempts to travel overseas last year but were turned back at their destinations.
Australian Federal Police acting deputy commissioner Justine Saunders told a Senate estimates hearing on Monday 41 per cent were trying to reach southeast Asian countries.
Indonesia was previously the most popular destination for Australians sex offenders with 21 attempts a month in 2014 but this dropped to 10 since co-operation was ramped up with Indonesian immigration officials.
