Runway model speaks candidly about undergoing gender reassignment

The toast of the fashion world, Andrej Pejic made famous the androgynous look, but since April 'Andrej' has become 'Andreja'.

The 22-year-old from Broadmeadows has undergone sexual reassignment surgery to become a woman and her mum couldn't be prouder.

"I'm proud, so proud. This is the best person in the world, she is really, really something special," Jadranka Pejic said.

Since being discovered as a 17-year-old working at McDonalds, its been a meteoric rise to the top for Pejic - she currently graces the runways for designers Marc Jacobs and Jean-Paul Gaultier.
