Aussie GPs urged to donate pay to Ebola

Australian doctors are being urged to help fight Ebola by donating one day's pay, which is between $200 to $5000 depending on their seniority and specialty.

Twice The Doctor Foundation founder Dr Robert Baume described the Ebola outbreak in West Africa as an unprecedented emergency.

"This is a once in a lifetime emergency," said the Gosford-based rheumatologist.

"There are no good treatments for Ebola and we don't know the extent of what's going to happen with this.

"Because it's a medical condition I believe it's a medical responsibility and doctors want to do something."

Dr Baume said if only 30 per cent of doctors in Australia donated a day's pay on D-Day for Ebola on December 8 the Foundation would raise about $20 million.

The funds will be channelled through UNICEF to be used in Sierra Leone.
