'Extremely disrespectful': At least 50 graves vandalised at Melbourne cemetery

Dozens of graves at a Melbourne cemetery have been destroyed in a callous act of vandalism.

Vandals set upon at least 50 gravestones at Fawkner Cemetery in Melbourne's north, splashing them with red paint, smashing photos and stealing treasured keepsakes.

Councillor Oscar Yildiz from Moreland City Council was visiting his late father's grave on Saturday when he discovered the shocking scene.

"My dad's headstone, his photo was smashed ... doors to graves were broken, decorations were trashed," he said on 3AW this morning.

"The glass, cabinets, they were all broken.

"There were a lot of letters and photos of people scattered all over the ground, pictures of loved ones.

"It was a pretty senseless act of vandalism ... extremely disrespectful.

"When I saw dad's, I was pretty heartbroken."

Mr Yildiz said there did not appear to be any method to the actions.

"Anyone that had on their headstone an eagle or an angel, or had a picture, seemed to be targeted."

Police are investigating the incident.
