An asylum seeker boy being held on Nauru has had surgery on his broken arm on the island nation, the immigration department says.

The mother of Erfan Paridari, 11, had reportedly been told her son would be flown to India to receive surgery, but department secretary Michael Pezzullo confirmed the boy was treated in Nauru.

"It's been repaired and he underwent surgery in recent days," Mr Pezzullo told a parliamentary inquiry into allegations of abuse at the Australian offshore detention centre on Nauru.
