Arson attack on popular Melbourne dining strip overnight

Police are appealing for witnesses after an arson attack on a Melbourne restaurant resulted in approximately $50,000 worth of damage.

Witnesses told police they saw three people throw several molotov cocktails into Republica restaurant at St Kilda Sea Baths at about 1.50am last night.

The three offenders were last seen running along Jacka Parade towards Fitzroy Street.

At the time of the attack they were wearing dark clothing with hoods or scarves over their faces.

Nobody was injured in the fire which fire fighters managed to contain before it could spread to adjoining businesses.

An arson chemist will investigate the scene today.
