A P-plater has lost his licence after being caught speeding at 170km/h in an 80km/h zone and crashing into a house in Sydney's northwest.

Traffic police spotted the westbound Ford Falcon driving 101km/h in a 60km/h zone on Springwood Road, Yarramundi, at about 5.30am on Wednesday.

Police gave chase and it's alleged the car's speed increased to 170km/h.

The car lost control, crashing into the mailbox and retaining wall of a house at the intersection of Shearwater Crescent and Kestral Way.

During a search of the car, police seized a set of knuckledusters from the centre console.

The provisional (P2) driver, an 18-year-old Yarramundi man, was arrested and charged with possessing prohibited weapons and various driving offences.
