Man charged after wild brawl outside Gold Coast school
Several teachers were hit during a massive brawl involving an allegedly armed man and numerous students at a Gold Coast high school yesterday afternoon.
Two people were arrested over the fight, a 16-year-old boy and 29-year-old man, which broke out about 3pm at Pacific Pines State High School.
The brawl started after the man allegedly armed with a torque wrench allegedly arrived at the school.
Police said officers responded to initial reports a man was armed with a bat, and arrived at the school to find a large amount of students fighting.
"Police arrived and found that it was a disturbance between two school groups, at this stage I’m unable to say who and how many," Acting Senior Sergeant Brad Miller said.
"There were spot brawls in the carpark of the school.
"The fight was still going as police arrived but police were able to quell it quite fast."
Sgt Miller said some boys received minor facial injuries, and some teachers were also allegedly hit.
"One of the young fellows was injured… just some facial injuries, QAS (Queensland Ambulance Service) has had a look," he said.
"Teachers were attempting to intervene, as teachers do, and unfortunately they've worn some wayward blows from the combatants."
Many brawlers ran away after the fight and have not yet been identified, he said.
"Apparently there's two outstanding but there could be more, quite a number absconded on police arrival."
The 16-year-old arrested by police was later released with a caution.
Police said a 29-year-old man from Coomera was charged with going armed so as to cause fear, possession of a knife in a public place, and driving under the influence.
The man is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on November 3.
