Archibald Prize 2018: Yvette Coppersmith wins for self-portrait

The winner of the 2018 Archibald Prize has been announced as Yvette Coppersmith for her painting ‘Self-portrait, after George Lambert’.

The artist used oil and acrylic on linen, and said she favours self-portraits because “it allows me to work from life, with intense absorption in the painting process”.

The painting pays homage to one of her favourite artists George Lambert, and is the fifth artwork Coppersmith has entered in the Archibald Prize.

“His style was academic, yet he supported the avant-garde in Australia and painted portraits of his artistic contemporaries Thea Proctor and Hera Roberts – both independent, self-possessed style-makers at a time of burgeoning female empowerment,” Coppersmith said of Lambert’s work.

“In referencing George Lambert’s style, it’s like an outfit slipped on, creating a fixed image of an ever-changing self.”
