Crowds set to return to Melbourne Anzac Day commemorations

After two years of disrupted plans, crowds will once again be welcomed back at Anzac Day services across Victoria.

It's the first time since 2019 crowds will be allowed to return in full capacity.

RSL Victoria president Rob Webster said it was welcome news for veterans.

"We're back," he said.

In 2019, due to COVID-19 restrictions, Australians were told to hold their own dawn services in their driveways by candlelight.

Last year, ceremonies went ahead with strict capped numbers.

However, that seems to be in the past, with no restrictions set to be in place this year.

Anzac Day Commemorations began early in Victoria today with primary and secondary school students paying their respects during Melbourne Legacy's 90th Anzac student commemoration ceremony.

Among them, Year 11 student Harrison Brett attended wearing his grandfather Alan's medals.

"I know we've been angry we couldn't do it ... but many of us were able to commemorate in our own way and the kids here today is the next generation," Dr Webster said.

On April 25, the dawn service will start at Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance at 5.30am followed by the march at 8.30am.

There are no bookings or tickets are required but you will have to check-in.
