Sydney family recreates Anzac Day procession for beloved great-grandfather

Richard Wilson, 95, typically performs the annual Anzac Day march in honour of "all the fellas that didn't make it".

But after coronavirus put a temporary stop to the procession, his family devised a new way to mark the occasion - in the front yard of his Carlingford home.

Relatives assembled a small tribute shrine, complete with small handmade wreaths, drawings, and notes of thanks commemorating the great-grandfather's service to Australia.

Mr Wilson served in New Guinea and Borneo, marking his 21st birthday on the frontline.

"I still think about all me mates," Mr Wilson told 9News.

"I used to feel terribly sorry for mothers [of the soldiers who died]. Young people have no idea what those ladies went through."

After a year on the sidelines, Mr Wilson hopes to return to marching next year.

"I'm hopeful that I can still move enough to go back in the march again," he said.
