Koala injured in bushfires released back into the wild

A koala injured in devastating bushfires has recovered and was released back to her natural habitat today.

The burnt koala, named Anwen, was released into the Lake Innes Nature Reserve, after five months of recovery at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital from burns and a chlamydia infection.

"The habitat is looking extremely healthy after much rain, and we're sure Anwen will thrive now," the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital said on their Facebook page today.

Anwen was the third burns patient to be admitted from the Lake Innes fireground to the hospital on NSW's Mid North Coast.

When Anwen arrived at the animal hospital, she had singes on 90 per cent of her body, radiant burns to her hindquarters and burns to the pads on her hands and feet.

The animal hospital cared for Anwen as she recovered and said she "loved the daily delivery of fresh leaf".

"Thank you to Anwen's supporters for much needed funding and the love she received from across the world," the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital said.
