The laws that give free-to-air TV stations the option of showing major sporting events aren't going anywhere any time soon, Communications Minister Mitch Fifield says.

Anti-siphoning laws aren't part of the recently revealed package to change media ownership and Senator Fifield says changing them would require both community understanding and broad parliamentary support.

"I don't think those circumstances are there at the moment," he told ABC TV on Sunday, adding the laws provide comfort to the public that their favourite events will be on free to air.
