Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk forgets Labor candidate's name

Those familiar with the US political comedy Veep will know the value of the "bagman".

The character Gary Walsh performs the role - more commonly known as a "body man" in American politics - of the ever present staff member to President Selina Meyer.

He's quick to provide food, drinks, documents, grooming items, and other vital tools of the trade.

But the bagman is also the master of subtle whispers in the ear keeping the inept president up to speed on the names and faces of the people she needs to know to avoid awkward political moments. He is the most valuable member on her staff.

Annastascia Palaszczuk could've done with a better bagman today.

Campaigning in the regional seat of Condamine, the premier toured a chickpea processing plant alongside the business owner before holding a press conference to announce $19 million of agriculture funding to create jobs and boost productivity.

But a very early, and very predictable, question caught her off-guard. Where was her candidate for Condamine? The very electorate she was in.

"Unfortunately he can't be here today. He's actually at work and couldn't get leave from work," Ms Palaszczuk responded with a rising look of concern on her face.

"What's his name?' asked a reporter.

"Brendon," she responded with a sense of dejection, knowing the follow up.

"What's the surname?" the reporter fired back, going in for the kill.

"Um ... I've got it here somewhere," Ms Palaszczuk despondently offered, as she thumbed through some pages on the lectern.

A local newspaper journalist ended her painfully awkward scramble by informing her the Labor candidate for the seat is Brendon Huybregts.

Admittedly, Huybregts is not a name that rolls off the tongue, and as an LNP stronghold on a 17 percent margin, Brendon Huybregts is unlikely to wrestle the seat of Condamine over to the Labor column, but today's gaffe is still embarrassing for the premier.

After suffering days of non-stop distractions around the Adani controversy, this campaign memory-lapse will be the memorable moment of the day.

Labor are running candidates in almost all of the 93 seats up for grabs in the Queensland state election.

Ms Palaszczuk shouldn't be expected to have total recall of all their names and biographies, but when you step into an electorate it pays to remember the people who are trying to keep you in the job of premier.

It's not a mistake Gary Walsh would ever let President Meyer make. Ms Palaszczuk obviously needs a better bagman.
