Teenager twirls possum by tail at house party and flings it over fence

A teenager at a Brisbane house party has been filmed twirling around a possum by its tail before cruelly flinging the animal over a neighbour’s fence.

In the video posted to Snapchat last night, partygoers can be seen drinking, dancing and laughing as the possum is being tortured.

A woman, 18, who does not wish to be named, told 9news.com.au she was watching her Snapchat stories at 10.30pm last night when she “witnessed a possum being completely abused”.

At first, she couldn’t watch the video due to its graphic content.

“It was difficult to watch and really off-putting,” she said.

“When you think you know some of those people and can’t imagine anyone doing that. It’s not acceptable.

“I don’t know the boy swinging the possum but I do know people who were at the party.

“It looks like the possum moved a little bit at the start.”

The teenagers were attending a house party at Solar Street, Coorparoo, when the animal cruelty act occurred.

Some of them were 2017 graduates of Villanova College.

It is unknown if the possum was alive at the time and what condition it may be in if it survived.

It comes after a 19-year-old man was filmed throwing a cat into a wall and then hurling it over a fence in Ipswich in March.

Queensland Police and the RSPCA have not received a complaint over last night’s incident.

“About a month ago, it was a cat being thrown over the fence in Ipswich,” an RSPCA spokesman said.

“It’s just more and more incidents coming to our attention because of social media.”  

In Queensland, animal cruelty charges carry a maximum penalty of three years’ imprisonment or a $220,000 fine.
