Andrews urges end to Vic Speaker impasse

Victorian Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews has urged the premier to meet with him before parliament resumes to discuss the impasse over the future of the Speaker.

There were chaotic scenes in parliament last year when the opposition tried to force a vote of confidence in Ken Smith, after balance-of-power MP Geoff Shaw announced he no longer supported the Speaker.

The chaos led to the Speaker shutting down parliament for two days and the suspension of two Labor MPs.

The opposition says Mr Smith no longer has a majority and should stand down.

Mr Andrews said on Monday Labor would support Liberal Christine Fyffe becoming Speaker.

"Today, I issue a simple request to (Premier) Denis Napthine," he said.

"I will meet him, any time and any place, to help him fix this parliament and end this circus."

Mr Smith has announced he will not contest November's election, but says he will be in the chair when parliament resumes on Tuesday.

Meanwhile Mr Andrews said the party would stick by unions, despite a poll showing a majority of people believed Labor should distance itself from the union movement.

You should never forget your roots, he said.

"This motion that we should suddenly walk away from workers like Tony Abbott and Denis Napthine did from the SPC Ardmona workers last week - you are not going to get that from me," he told ABC radio.
