Andrew Constance confirms he is seeking Eden-Monaro pre-selection

NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance has confirmed he will seek pre-election for the seat of Eden-Monaro.

Mr Constance is currently the state Liberal member for Bega but will step down from this role to try his hand at federal politics.

He said today the community, ravaged by bushfires just months ago and now hit by coronavirus, have been through "so much pain and trauma".

Mr Constance also paid tribute to popular outgoing Labor MP Mike Kelly, who retired from the NSW South Coast seat due to ill health.

"Mike Kelly has been an incredibly good member for the people of Eden-Monaro."

Yesterday, NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro announced he would not run as a candidate in the upcoming byelection, clearing the way for Mr Constance.

Mr Barilaro said he spent the weekend pondering what was a "difficult" decision.

"The polling showed I could win," Mr Barilalo claimed, speaking with reporters yesterday.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Monday said she was "extraordinarily pleased" Mr Barilaro was remaining as deputy premier.

Liberal senator Jim Molan is also reportedly considering standing and has until Friday to nominate himself.

Bega mayor Kristy McBain has been selected as Labor's candidate saying on Monday she was honoured by the endorsement.
