Amnesty International pleads with Widodo

Amnesty International has made a direct plea to Indonesian President Joko Widodo, asking him to grant clemency to 10 drug offenders, including Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan, awaiting imminent execution.

In a letter signed by 13 directors of the organisation from around the world, they acknowledge Indonesia's need to punish and deter criminal acts, but argue there's no evidence the death penalty is effective.

"We respectfully urge you to halt plans to carry out these executions," they say, adding they want to see Indonesia abolish the death penalty.
