Paramedics injured after ambulance rolls en route to child birth

Two paramedics have been taken to hospital after their ambulance on its way to help deliver a baby collided with a car in North Melbourne.

The ambulance was just minutes away from an emergency child birth when it collided with a black BMW and rolled on Queensberry Street just after 9am.

A male and female paramedic were taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with minor injuries.

A third person was assessed at the scene.

Police say the ambulance entered the intersection with lights and sirens on, in which case other drivers should give way.

"It's also incumbent on the ambulance to exercise due care and attention as they proceed through," Acting Senior Sergeant Rob Milliken said.

No patients were aboard the ambulance at the time of the crash.

A second crew was dispatched to attend the birth, but the patient had left home by the time it arrived.

Police investigations are now underway.
