Paramedics have had a busy start to 2017 with close to 2000 calls for medical help taken between 4pm on New Year's Eve and 3am on New Year's Day.

Many of the calls related to drunken behaviour, including minor injuries caused by violence, intoxication and falls from walls, fences and wharves, a NSW Ambulance spokesman said.

Calls to triple-zero peaked between 2-3am, with 229 calls for medical assistance.
