Alyssa Azar, youngest Aussie to scale Everest, safely back at base camp

Queensland teenager Alyssa Azar has made it back safely to base camp after becoming the youngest Australian to successfully climb Mount Everest.

The 19-year-old, who reached the summit of the world's tallest mountain on the weekend took to social media to announce her safe return to the foot of the world's tallest peak.

"Thanks everybody for your messages of support, I am now back safely in Base Camp after an amazing climb and successful expedition," she posted.

She managed to climb the final 800m to the summit on Saturday morning, finally conquering the 8848m mountain on what was her third attempt.

"It is something that has been a goal of hers for several years," family friend Sonya Taylor told the ABC.

"She has an amazing mental and physical strength about her."

But, as Ms Taylor noted, descending Everest is as challenging and dangerous as climbing it – a fact brought home all-too-hard by two tragic deaths which coincided with Alyssa's triumph.

Fellow Aussie Maria Strydom perished, along with a Dutch climber, of hypoxia on Saturday afternoon (local time).
