Alleged fake cop with bombs to face court

A man who shut down a major Queensland highway for five hours after allegedly dressing up as a police officer and packing his car with explosives is due to face court.

Glyn William Newton, 30, was allegedly speeding down the Ipswich Motorway with blue and red lights flashing on his dashboard when police pulled him over near Wacol on Friday night.

They searched his car and found suspicious devices and chemical explosives in the back seat and the boot, as well as a stash of marijuana.

The motorway was shut down for five hours as the bomb squad set off three controlled explosions.

Newton appeared briefly in Ipswich Magistrates Court charged with possessing dangerous drugs, manufacturing explosives, failing to correctly store explosives, unauthorised transport of explosives and assuming the designation or description of a police officer.

He was remanded in custody and is due to reappear in the same court on Monday.
