Alleged drink driver blew five times legal limit

Police have praised members of the public for helping detain an alleged drunk driver in Melbourne yesterday accused of being five times over the legal limit.

Several motorists called triple zero after seeing a vehicle allegedly weaving dangerously while travelling along the Princes Freeway shortly before 8pm.

The drivers tailed the man from Tullamarine, flashing their lights to try and signal the vehicle to pull over.

Their efforts paid off and the driver parked his car on the side of the freeway, where a member of the public took the man's keys from the ignition.

Police arrived and the 48-year-old male driver took a breath test where he returned an alleged reading of .254.

The Bell Park man was found to be a disqualified driver and is expected to be charged with drink driving and other traffic offences.

His Toyota Corolla was also impounded.
