Aldi has launched a home delivery service in South Australia through a new partnership with DoorDash, aiming to increase competition and lower grocery prices for consumers.

The move, which follows a trial in Canberra, allows customers to have their groceries delivered by DoorDash "dashers", who will handle the shopping and packing.

"Aldi's high-quality, affordable prices paired with DoorDash's fast, reliable and easy-to-use platform is a huge win for South Australian consumers," Simon Rossi from DoorDash said.

While the service offers convenience – and is aiming to let Aldi break into the delivery market dominated by Coles and Woolworths – there are extra costs for customers.

"There are delivery and service fees and some mark-ups on items," Rossi said.

For example, Nutella is priced at $5.39 in-store but more than $6 on the app. Similarly, Colgate toothpaste costs $3.49 in-store but is fifty cents more online.

A delivery from Aldi Norwood to the city incurs a $2.99 delivery fee, a 25-cent bag fee, and a $4.99 service fee, although first-time DoorDash customers are exempt from the initial delivery fee.

The South Australian launch follows a successful trial in Canberra five weeks ago, with plans to expand the partnership nationwide.

"We're excited that, in the future, we will have some of the special buys, the middle aisle that Aldi have," Rossi said

"That will come to the market in the coming weeks and months."
