Aldi attacker facing murder charge has sentence adjourned

The sentence of an Illawarra man charged over a vicious attack on an Aldi employee at Albion Park Rail on the New South Wales South Coast has been adjourned until March.

Mervyn Davidson was present in Wollongong District Court this morning, as his lawyer told Judge Haesler they were waiting on a psychiatric report.

Lawyer James Jeffery said Davidson received a psychiatric assessment on Saturday, which could give an accurate diagnosis of whether he suffered a drug-induced psychosis.

The 44-year-old has pleaded guilty to all four charges, saying he was under the influence of ice when he stormed the Aldi store at 5pm on Sunday, January 29, 2017 with an aluminium baseball bat.

CCTV captured the moment a 56-year-old worker was serving a customer when she was shockingly whacked across the head, knocking her unconscious to the floor.

Davidson the attempted to rob the till when co-worker David Guevara jumped on his back pulling him away from the register, before he too was struck by Davidson several times in the back.

Two other men then wrestled Davidson to the ground, holding him until police arrive.

His victim was rushed to Wollongong Hospital, where she underwent surgery for bleeding on the brain.

Court documents reveal Davidson went on to allegedly assault a police officer and choke his cell-mate unconscious at Silverwater jail.

Today's matter comes in the wake of fresh charges of murder, following the death of an inmate at Silverwater Jail last Friday.

He'll face Wollongong District Court for sentencing over the botched Aldi robbery on March 9.
