NSW police have dropped investigations into an alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl earlier this week after the allegation was revealed to be false.

In a brief statement to media, a police spokesman confirmed the investigation has concluded and they are no longer seeking three men, whose faces were released to the public as computer-generated images yesterday.

The spokesman said police had been told the 17-year-old girl was sexually assaulted after being confronted by the trio while walking across the Dean Street footbridge in Albury on Tuesday at about 6.30pm.

The statement said detectives from Local Area Command had conducted extensive inquiries since the reported incident, including forensic testing, and have spoken to a number of people.

"No further action is anticipated,
" it said.
