Al Qaeda says Man Monis driven to siege after 'peaceful protests'

An Arabian magazine produced by terrorist group Al Qaeda has issued a veiled warning to Australians, saying the Sydney siege was the result of "peaceful protests" being ignored.

Propaganda magazine Inspire claimed gunman Man Monis, who held a group of people hostage in Sydney's Martin Place for more than 16 hours, had been driven to his actions by the Australian government, News Corp has reported.

Two victims and Monis himself died in the final moments of the siege, which made headlines around the world.

The editorial also addressed Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

"Mr Abott (sic) you should have known by now that peace and security is a two-way equation," the authors wrote.

The magazine also called on would-be jihadists in western nations including Australia, to attack their home countries rather than travelling overseas.

Monis, who stood accused of being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife and dozens of sexual assaults at the time of his death, was not believed to have been acting as part of a terrorist group when he began the siege.
