Airport unwanted in western Sydney: Husic

A western Sydney federal Labor MP has warned that residents in his region will suffer aircraft noise around the clock if a second city airport is established at Badgerys Creek.

The Abbott government reportedly is poised to announce the go-ahead for the long-awaited project, along with more than $200 million in funding for transport links.

Opposition MP Ed Husic believes it will take a curfew-free airport to convince airlines to shift from central Sydney.

"To get the big airlines like Qantas to move to western Sydney you need to give them a carrot," he told Sky News on Wednesday.

As a result Western Sydney residents would have to cop the impacts from a 24-a-hour day airport unlike households in Treasurer Joe Hockey's North Sydney electorate.

Mr Husic said residents in his region previously had voiced their strong objections to a second airport with more than 15,000 people turning out at protest rallies.

NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell, who has said the issue of a second airport is entirely up to the federal government, declined to comment on the latest speculation.

But he told reporters in Sydney the $200 million transport funding package appeared to be "missing a zero".
