Aine McGrath jailed over crash which killed friend Sarah Kelly

A woman has been sentenced to three years and eight months behind bars over a crash that killed her friend.

Aine McGrath, 25 was texting her boyfriend in the lead up to the crash before losing control of her car on the Mitchell Freeway.

Her workmate Sarah Kelly, 25, was killed back in August 2016.

Prosecutors alleged she may have been speeding while texting when she lost control of her car and veered across four lanes of the Mitchell Freeway near Leederville, crashing into a ute.

But McGrath's defence claimed she was travelling at the speed limit, although she had earlier been texting.

They said she had to take evasive action after a vehicle cut in front of her, causing her to lose control.

When the sentence was handed down Mcgrath broke down looking at her family in the courtroom who were all visibly upset.

"We will review the sentencing remarks, get some instructions from Miss McGrath. Devastated by the outcome," her defence lawyer John Hawkins said

McGrath will be eligible for parole in 22 months. She also won't be able to drive for three years once she is released.
