AGL considers keeping Liddell running

Energy giant AGL has agreed to take to its board a proposal to keep the Liddell coal-fired power station open until 2027 or sell it to another party.

Malcolm Turnbull and Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg met with AGL boss Andrew Vesey in Canberra on Monday, after the government flagged interest in keeping the Liddell power station operating beyond its scheduled shutdown date of 2022.

Mr Frydenberg told reporters after the 90-minute meeting the company would take a proposal to its board to keep the plant open for another five years beyond 2022 or to sell to another party.

At the same time the company will also work up a plan to ensure sufficient extra supply into the market the equivalent of what is coming out of Liddell.
