AGL fined over electricity contracts

Electricity giant AGL has paid $60,000 in fines for failing to tell its customers their fixed-term contracts were coming to an end and offering them a new deal.

Australian Energy Regulator chair Paula Conboy said that by failing to tell more than 1000 customers across NSW, South Australia and Queensland their contracts were due to end, AGL didn't give them a chance or time to look around for a better deal on their power bills.

The Turnbull government hauled electricity retailers in for a dressing down twice in 2017, telling them they needed to do more to ensure their customers were on the best possible deal.
