The Australian Federal Police wants to improve security at some of its offices to increase protection against bomb attacks or intruders.

The agency is proposing upgrades to eight facilities, including its Canberra headquarters, as well as state headquarters in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth with work costing almost $40 million.

The AFP told the parliamentary public works committee on Friday some of the work on the four headquarters buildings was critical to prevent the type of vehicle attacks which occurred at police stations in Sydney, Adelaide and the Gold Coast this year.
