AFP investigates Afghan war crime claims

Federal police officers have travelled to Afghanistan to investigate allegations of war crimes committed by Australian soldiers.

The AFP officers were joined by Afghan authorities during their recent deployment.

"As this investigation is ongoing, the AFP will not confirm or deny the specific incidents or the identity of those subject to the investigation," a spokeswoman told AAP on Friday.

Acting Prime Minister Michael McCormack said it was a matter for the AFP, which had been tasked with the investigation.

"They're obviously investigating something that has been alleged and until they come up with something then that is the appropriate course of action," he said.
